Shah Rukh Khan, an actor and entrepreneur, revealed his new OTT (over the top) company SRK+ on Twitter. Khan has teased the release of his OTT debut before, and this isn’t the first time he’s done so. A series of advertisements last year promoted his relationship with Disney+ Hotstar. ‘SRK+ is coming shortly,’ the actor finally confirmed on Tuesday. He wrote, “Kuch kuch hone wala hai, OTT ki duniya mein.” Khan will also work with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap on his OTT project.
More than 40 OTT apps are available in India, including prominent video-on-demand providers such as Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and others. Will Khan’s new endeavour succeed in an overcrowded market such as India?
“With worldwide audiences, SRK has a very strong recall. According to Karan Taurani, senior vice president of Elara Capital, “here is where the platform will have an advantage.” Experts point out that the platform does not have to feature exclusively SRK films. “The OTT market is now quite fragmented. Even YRF has declared an OTT platform and is attempting to create one using YRF films. In terms of content offerings, there will be a lot of overlap,” he said.
According to Taurani, the OTT platform will assist the performers in leveraging their brand value. “Their fans would be interested in seeing unique content from him.” It may also have actors by other actors as a business model, which might enable them monetise their work more effectively,” he said.
According to a recent research by Deloitte, the video streaming market could increase at a CAGR of more than 20% over the next decade, reaching $13 billion–$15 billion, thanks to original content and pricing changes. “Paid subscribers are also expected to grow at a CAGR of 17% from 102 million now to 224 million by 2026,” according to the Deloitte report.
Experts believe that exclusive material, rather than his flicks, will distinguish SRK+. “Because he has such a large fan base outside of India, that will make a significant difference.” That’s where this type of OTT platform’s potential and scale lie. Taurani continued, “It’s niche in nature, but it may become a viable economic proposition.”
With Netflix’s Bard of Blood and Betaal, Shah Rukh had joined the digital streaming world as a producer. He will next be seen as an actor in Pathaan, which will be released early next year.
